Engagement Shoot Locations

I always say to my couples, when it comes to choosing your location for your engagement shoot, choose somewhere or do something that has meaning to you two. Was it where you went on your first date? An activity that you love to do together? A place where you both feel at peace? Are you both plant lovers, and love the idea of a tropical backdrop. You could even opt for the countryside if you’re having an inner city wedding? Or head to the city for your pre shoot if your wedding venue is amongst rolling hills. Other things to consider is how you want your images to look. If you planning on framing these photos large scale on the wall in your home, then what style will work with the aesthetics of the room. If you head to the beach which is very open, with light sand backdrop, then your images will appear lighter and brighter, if you headed to woodlands, your images would appear darker. If you want hints of bright lights and colours, then places like the fair are great for this. Or if you prefer the greens on mountain sides, maybe the Lake District is the place for you.

Lastly, think about the clothes you want to wear. Do you want summery and floaty clothes or get wrapped up in cosy hats and scarfs? This will determine what time of year to have your pre shoot.

Below is some ideas of locations I have previous shot at to give you an idea of how different backdrops can give a different feel to your photos.

Palm, Green or Butterfly House

If your a plant lover, than this tropical backdrop is the perfect place to have your engagement shoot, it’s also ideal if the weather isn’t so great outside, as we’ll be under shelter, but still have great natural light. And they’re usually nice and warm. Some of these may have a hire fee.

Rooftop

Rooftops look incredible during sunrise or sunset! That glow from the low sun when you’re high up just hits differently. It’s a great open space and gives it that perfect urban feel.

Mountains

The Lake District and Peak District is within an hour travel for myself that both have incredible backdrops for photos of the two of you. Let’s give ourselves a challenge and head up to the top of a mountain.

City Luxe

Our cities have some incredible historical and modern building, and these make for incredible backdrops. The pale brick building make for beautiful backdrops for those lighter feel images.

The Beach

One of my favourites! You can really have fun at the beach, especially if your up for getting a bit wet in the water. There’s plenty of space for movement and if you go early morning, its always really quiet so there won’t be many people around. You can star in the sand dunes and work your way down to the sea.

Historic Building

These make stunning backdrops, with their beautiful architecture and grandeur. There’s usually always steps too, which is great for those seating shots that I love.

Urban City

Do you love the colourful street art found in your city? This makes for the most incredible backdrops if you want really add some colour to your images. I mean how great are the colours we found in the street art in Birmingham city centre here.

A Park in Autumn

So many people love autumn, those beautiful orange, red and yellow tones, that crips but not too cold weather. So if you’re looking at images with an orange feel, then autumn is the perfect time to do an engagement shoot.
